Our Home School Chick

Hi friends,

Some of you may remember my sons' posts about our first  and second clutches of baby chicks that we hatched out.

Well, we tried for clutch #3 before winter set in. We put 8 eggs under a broody Black Australorp hen. Only one egg hatched this time.

Here's the little guy (or gal) that came out..

Now, since this little one is the only "child" so to speak, he gets pretty lonely. And somehow the children have talked me into letting him come into the house so that as they call it, "have some company".

He must think he's human because he loves to stay in the school room if we're having our lessons in there. We consider him our newest student.

He loves to perch on Mimi's chair..

But I guess you could say his favorite subject is Math, because he loves to act as our official Math "tutor"..... as you can see in the following photos..

I hope your home school days are as fun-filled as ours.  :)

Happy homeschooling!

"He shall cover you with His feathers, and under His wings you shall take refuge." ~ Psalm 91 :4

  3. Oh, chicks are so adorable! Your children must be enjoying their school companion. :) Two questions, though, what will you do as it grows bigger, and how do you keep it from leaving a mess?

Blessings to you and your flock! ~Lisa

    1. Hi Lisa,
Good questions. When the chicken was a "newborn" we kept him by in the basement by the woodstove, and the children would get him out several times aday. Now that he's bigger, he stays outside in a small coop til he's ready to be integrated with the hens. The children get him out and play with him when they're outside. And they still bring him inside, too, but he's not inside as much as he used to be.
As for the mess, there were only 2 of those and that was on the concrete basement floor, so it wiped up easily with a wet paper towel.
Hope you're having a wonderful week, my friend. :)

    2. I see you're an early riser, too. :) Thanks for answering my Q's...I was just so curious! As for my week, it's been a fabulous one as we just found out we're expecting our first grandchild!! All praise to the Lord for His abundant goodness; truly, we are overwhelmed (son and d.i.l. who are living with us!). Blessings, my friend! ~Lisa

  6. That is just so cute! We always have our baby chicks in the classroom too -- a little distracting, but oh so fun. But then I'm always happy for the day when they are big enough to go out to the coop when the time comes. That little one is probably always going to think of you guys as his family. I just love chickens. I love their personalities and how they follow up around everywhere. Good country fun!

    1. I agree, Jane - baby chicks are so much fun! But, like you, I am more than ready to put them outside when they're ready. We love our birds, too..they are very entertaining. :)

  7. So cute. Definitely looks like a pet. Love the peeks into your days, friend. How are you feeling? My Beth is doing better than I thought, just days away from the first snow. She is only stiff for the first half-hour of her day. Last winter she was sometimes stiff and unwilling to walk until lunch or after. I am praying for both of you for comfort.
