Weekly Wrap-up {1}

Homeschool Mother's Journal, 4/26/13

In my life this week...I am still getting used to taking care of our dairy goats. Milking has become a habit, but I'm still adjusting to the actual care of the goats. But the more I do it, the more I enjoy it. And the children are loving it, too.  :)

In our homeschool this week...we got all of the lessons completed in 4 days, so we have today off - the youngers and I will  run errands. And Ian went to work with hubby.

Helpful homeschool advice or tips to share...when looking for next year's school books, check out the used books at abebooks.com  or on amazon.com. I got all of my children's books (used)  for next year for $130.00 using both websites. Some of the books only cost a penny! And they are in great shape. Also, with the AO curriculum that we use, many of the books are in the public domain, so they can be read online for free, saving even more money.

People we're seeing...friends came for the afternoon yesterday. And today, our homeschool group is having park play date. Not sure if we're going, though.

My favorite thing this week was...Ian conquered graphing parabolas! Yay!  :)

My children's favorite things this week were...the readings in George Washington's World, Abigail Adams, Shakespeare, and sketching in their Nature journals.

Things I am working on... trying to find joy in the Lord - even in the midst of trials.

I am cooking...Ham-Broccoli Stromboli and Cream of Tomato for supper tonight.

I am grateful for...a very encouraging conversation with a dear friend on Wednesday afternoon.

I am praying for...a friend whose mom passed away of cancer 2 days ago. She was such a sweet lady and radiated the love of the Lord. I am so thankful that her suffering is over and she is finally Home, but I'm saddened for the family members that have to adjust to life with her.

I rewarded my children this week with... homemade chocolate syrup to make chocolate goat milk.

Something I have my eye on...a grain mill to make my own flour. Wow - they are pricey! So at this point, I'm  praying about it.

A photo to share...

A quote to share..."If mothers could learn to do for themselves what they do for their children when these are overdone, we should have happier households. Let the mother go out to play!" ~ Charlotte Mason (vol.3 p.33)

Hoping you have a week-end full of the Lord's blessings, friends!  :)

  1. I'll have to show my son the crayfish photo. He loves to catch those and observe them. :) Have a blessed week, friend. That soup sounds good...it's been cold here.

    1. We love crayfish, too, Christine. They're very interesting creatures. And one day last summer, we caught quite a few and discovered something else about them: they're tasty. They taste like shrimp.
      Hope you have a delightful week-end. :)

  2. I like FREE and or CHEAP!!

I don't have a Kindle but I want one so badly!

I DO have a grain mill, for a couple years now -a Nutrimill, I used it very, very often in the first year, but sadly it's been sitting lonesome these days:(

They are very pricey, but I whole heartedly believe (it pays for itself 'after awhile').

I've looked at AO several times considering it for the 4 years of my daughter's start of High School this fall.... but, I get so confused! However, it doesn't take much for me to get confused!!

Maybe I'll do a weekly wrap up of our homeschool. I don't post about our homeschool enough... and we greatly LOVE homeschooling!!

God's blessing and peace- especially in the trials.

Loving to be bloggy friends, Deanna

    1. Sounds like you have the grain mill that I am considering, Deanna.
AO is confusing. It took my a while to figure it out. I'd love to read one of your wrap-ups. It's always an encouragement to hear from other home school moms.
      Thanks for stopping by. :)

    1. Hi Amy Jo,
I'm still getting the hang of milking. And my arms/hands get tired long before the milk runs out. But I am getting faster - slowly but surely. So glad you stopped by. :)

  5. Hi Lisa, So nice to hear from you again. I'm glad the goaties are allowing you a little visiting time now days. :) I'm sure they are a lot of fun.

Oh yes, Amazon & Abe are my go-to first-stop to shop for any and all books. I just purchased yesterday some VF curriculum for less than VF's "Deal of the Day" price at Amazon. I also sometimes check Alibris, eBay, and HomeschoolClassifieds.com, I love to save $.

I am sorry you are having some trials right now, but happy you are finding joy in the LORD. ((♥))

We have a grain mill, but it's the non-electric kind -- a "Country Living" grain mill from Pleasant Hill Grain. I think it's suppose to the best of the non-electric kind (you can buy a motor drive for it). It sure is heavy -- a good workout for the biceps when lifting it and thankfully the girls volunteer helping grind. I don't bake bread as much as I use to (since DH was diagnosed with diabetes & I'm trying to lose weight), but it's nice to have.

Do have a wonderful weekend my friend! It's lovely here at around 70° all weekend. All our snow is almost gone. I cleaned out the hosta glade this afternoon, but still had to work around a patch of snow/ice. ttfn ♥

    1. Hello Jane,
We are considering a non-electric mill. I have enough "hands" (10 to be exact - lol) to crank it for me. We have also cut back on bread somewhat b/c of the gluten. But grinding our own flour is so much cheaper than buying it; that's what's drawing me. Maybe someday....
It's been chilly here - near freezing at night, so the wood stove is in use again. But some of our garden is planted: peas, carrots, corn, cabbage, and squash.
Hope you have a sensational Saturday, dear friend.

  7. Sounds like life is full and busy at the mo Lisa! Lots of exciting happenings and huge learning curves. I love that CM quote - so true. BTW I have used, baked and posted on your delicious dandelion recipes that you have shared in recent years. Of course I have linked back to you and am so grateful for your sharing these yummy things that you can make from dandelions as we have an abundance of them in the garden this year!

So glad you're enjoying the recipes. We have an abundance of dandelions this year, too....thanks to not using herbicides because of our goatie friends. ;) Needless to say, our goats are getting plenty of Vitamin A these days. :)
Thanks so much for stopping, my friend.
